How to do Protective styles for Natural Hair

One of the most lovable things about natural hair is getting the freedom to create versatile styles with it. However, people often ignore the amount of time and energy it takes to create these natural hairstyles. People often don’t want to put in a lot of effort! This is why it’s better to give your hair and yourself a break with protective styles.

Now, what are Protective hairstyles? Well, it lets you keep the ends of your hair tucked away to discourage pulling, tugging, and manipulation. Moreover, this way helps to get faster hair growth and saves you so much time since the entire idea is to touch the hair as little as possible. Protective styles include buns, wigs, buns, two-strand twists, and braids (with or without extensions).

But Here is another fact to look into: Well, not everyone is a big fan and considers protective styling the key to damaged hair. Some of these hairstyles can actually cause breakage, especially when the hair doesn’t get enough moisturized.

Not sure what to do? We have researched and listed down 3 popular YouTubers’ advice and what they think about protective styles for natural hair.

Not all protective styles actually protect

Whitney White, known as Naptural85 on YouTube, is a vlogger, blogger, natural hair enthusiast, and entrepreneur.

Her advice for women of every hair length is,

“Protective styling is critical; it’s not only to choose a style that not only looks amazing but is also protective! I know that may sound an obvious thing, but there are many beautiful twisted, braided, and weaved hairstyles out there that looks so amazing and take a tremendous amount of skills to create, but not all are actually protective.

I always stick to a go-to tip: When you choose a protective style, never go for too small, too tight, or too long. Also, make sure your hair is moisturized, clean, and deep-conditioned before installation to make sure your hair can actually go long without any damage.

How you prepare your protective hairstyle is just as important as which style you choose. My favorite protective style is two-strand twists! They’re gentle, easy, and quick to install.

Additionally, they are molded into other hairstyles easily to switch up your look.”

Embrace Your Braids

Felicia Jones is a hairstylist and Instagram celebrity who offers her tips for maintaining healthy curly hair on her account.

“Protective styling is really helpful for those who have just started their journey. My recommendation will be to use a hair mask to give your hair some boost alongside using an organic growth oil for your scalp while protective styling.

I love braids because they’re so versatile and allow your scalp to breathe. When the hair around my face gives me trouble, I do a style with braids to give them a break. To refresh, you can make a mixture of water and your favorite essential oils.

Play it safe with Twist-outs

In 2016, Jarely set out to create a salon to transform what is often thought to be unmanageable curly hair & teach people how to embrace their natural God-given hair. Since then, Faith in Curls™ has provided high-quality services and support to the curly hair community. At Faith in Curls™, Jarely offers uniquely crafted haircuts and specialized styling for naturally curly hair.

 Her advice to women with natural curly long hairstyles is;

“I believe that protective styling is not so protective. It shows that it rips up the curl pattern of your natural hair and causes breakage in the hair shaft, which leads to hair looking frizzy and not absorbing the product. This happens as a result of hair being stretched out from tension. I believe that the safest styles for naturally curly hair are twist-outs and braid-outs.”
